What is The Solihull Approach?
The Solihull Approach is an integrated model of working, open learning resource packs and training programme for care professionals working with families, babies, children and young people who are affected by emotional and behavioural difficulties. It is an early intervention model and is also used for prevention and group work. The model incorporates three concepts of containment, reciprocity and behaviour management.
First developed in 1996 by joint working between Health Visitors and Psychotherapists in Solihull the approach was initially designed for Health Visitors to work with families with children with feeding, sleeping, toileting and behaviour difficulties. The Solihull Approach has developed further and is now used by a wide range of professionals from different agencies to work with families. The Solihull Approach Model provides professionals with a framework for thinking about children's behaviour that develops practice that can support effective and consistent approaches across agencies.
The Solihull Approach began in 1996 with a request from health visitors to the child psychotherapists and clinical psychologists in CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service). Hazel Douglas led the development of the Solihull Approach, which is now used by a wide range of practitioners working with families across the UK.
