Advocacy for social services clients
Advocacy is when someone speaks on your behalf to put your views and/or to help you get what you are entitled to.
Self-Advocacy is when you speak up for yourself. This can be difficult for some people who might need somebody to speak for them (an advocate), or somebody to help them speak up for themselves. Where somebody helps others to speak up for themselves it is called supported self-advocacy.
Why Might I need an Advocate?
You might need an advocate if you find it hard to speak up for yourself and need help with your daily living or with a specific problem. Having an advocate could:
• Help you to get information and services
• Help you choose what you want to do
• Help you to make people understand your point of view
An advocate can speak for you and will not judge you.
